What Happens If You Don’t Change Your Oil?

When your calendar is full, it can be natural to push aside certain tasks. While we here at Sid Dillon Chevrolet Fremont understand the feeling, oil changes shouldn’t fall into the category of skippable errands. What happens if you don’t change your oil? Since oil lubricates the moving parts inside your engine, fresh oil prevents wear and tear and keeps engine temperatures in a safe range. When oil changes are neglected, it leaves your engine susceptible to damage and overheating.

Luckily, when you work with Sid Dillon Chevrolet Fremont, you don’t have to worry about what happens if you don’t get your oil changed. Our team makes it easy to book car care online, offers competitive prices, and provides fast service to get you back on the Omaha streets. Learn more about the importance of oil changes below!

What Does Motor Oil Do?

Motor oil serves as a lubricant for the moving parts of your engine. Specifically, motor oil:

  • Reduces wear and tear on moving parts and cuts down friction.
  • Cleans sludge from the engine with dispersants.
  • Removes varnish from the engine.
  • Neutralizes acids that form from fuels, improves piston ring seals, and cools the engine when changed routinely.

Take our word for it, you don’t want to find out what happens if you don’t get your oil changed during your commute from Columbus to Blair!

How Often Should I Change My Vehicle’s Oil?

In order to avoid the hazardous way of finding out what happens if you don’t get your oil changed, you should have your old oil swapped out for fresh fluid on a routine basis. Generally, it’s recommended that you get an oil change every 7,500 to 10,000 miles, but your owner’s manual will have more specifics. Your driving habits will also impact the frequency of your oil changes. So, you can consult with our team if you’re unsure about setting a proper oil change interval.

How Do I Change the Oil Myself?

Start by checking your owner’s manual to determine what grade of oil your vehicle needs. From there, follow these steps to change your oil at home:

  1. Elevate your vehicle with jack stands or steel ramps.
  2. Find the drain plug on the bottom of your oil pan. Place your oil basin directly beneath it, unscrew the plug, and allow it to drain for about 15 minutes. Once the oil is fully drained, replace the plug.
  3. Take an oil filter wrench and remove your oil filter. Be careful – at this point, you can expect some extra oil to drain, so keep your oil basin handy.
  4. Rub some oil around the rubber seal of your new filter. This step ensures that the filter is watertight.
  5. Set the new filter in place, then tighten it by hand
  6. Now that the old oil is removed, you can remove the oil cap. Add the proper amount of new oil, which is listed in your owner’s manual. Replace the oil cap.
  7. Before cleaning up, check your oil level with your dipstick. If you’re low, slowly add a few more ounces of oil and check again. Repeat this process until the volume is sufficient.
