How to Tune Your Car for Spring

As spring approaches, Omaha and Columbus drivers are ready to embrace the warmth and sunshine. But is your vehicle ready for these seasonal changes, too? A spring tune-up is a great way to ensure your car is prepared to roll into the warmer months and take on new types of seasonal road challenges. So, learn how to tune your car for spring with our service pros so you and your car can be road-trip-ready!

1. Spring Clean Your Car

Just like you probably spend a day or two spring cleaning your house after winter, it’s important to spring clean your car. From freezing temperatures to heavily salted roads, the winter months can take a serious toll on your vehicle’s exterior condition. When you spring clean your car, you should have the exterior washed and waxed to restore its appearance. If you’re washing your car at home, adding a bit of baking soda to the soapy water can help remove excess salt buildup from the paint. You should also spring clean your car’s interior — remove the floor mats and wash them, vacuum out the entire cabin, and wipe down all of the hard surfaces to get things looking and feeling fresh and clean.

2. Inspect Your Tires

Winter conditions on the Blair roads are especially rough on tires. Check your tire treads for irregularities and have your tires rotated so you can be sure you have good traction before heading out on a long road trip. Additionally, check the tire pressure in all four tires and adjust it as needed so they are filled to the recommended PSI. If your tire pressure is off, it can lead to poor performance and reduced fuel economy.

3. Replace Wiper Blades and Fluids

You need to have good wiper blades in case of a spring or summer rainstorm. With that said, your spring tune-up should include inspecting the wiper blades and replacing them if necessary — if the rubber on the blades is cracked, or if the blades are streaking and skipping across the windshield, it’s definitely time to replace them. You likely use a lot of wiper fluid during the winter months, so you should also check the fluid level in the reservoir and top it off.

4. Check Your Battery

Many drivers skip this step when researching how to tune a car for spring. The electrical system should be evaluated so you don’t get stuck with a dead vehicle on a hot day. Many auto parts stores around Fremont will check your battery for free to determine how strong or weak it is. If it’s getting weak, it’s best to be proactive and replace it before it dies completely.

5. Change Your Oil

Your vehicle needs clean oil to crank out a strong performance on Columbus roads. Following the manufacturer-recommended maintenance schedule is essential, but it’s also a good idea to get an oil and filter change sometime around the start of spring. As the temperatures rise outdoors, clean oil will help your engine perform well without straining or overheating.
